DRINKS with zero calories are actually making us gain weight according to experts.
But while your favourite diet drink is helping you skip on the numbers, they’re actually upsetting the balance in our bodies and making us fat.
It’s all down to the artificial sweeteners they substitute the sugar for in diet drinks and the bacteria that lives in your gut.

He said: “Microbes are not only essential to how we digest food.
“They also control the calories we absorb and provide vital enzymes and vitamins, as well as keeping our immune system healthy.”
On The Food Programme on Radio 4 he said: “Emulsifiers in processed food, and even in ketchup and mayonnaise, damage the microbes in your gut.
But this isn’t an excuse to drink the sugary version.
Tim’s advice stands: “Artificial sweeteners mess up your microbes but sugar may be worse for your health. It’s best to avoid both.”
But it’s not just diet drinks you should be thinking twice about.
Popular breakfast granola is packed with fat and sugar.
Many get drawn in by the healthy ingredients such as low GI oats and nuts, which are a good source of fat.
