SUMMER is here and a glut of delicious produce has hit shelves - with one item in particular catching the attention of shoppers.
Strawberries have outsold staples such as milk and bread
This equates to 50,000,000 a year.
The delicious red fruit was the bestselling item for 20 weeks in a row last year, and outsold milk and bread.
Sainsbury’s sells over 15 different British varieties across the summer months.
The varieties are sourced from 21 UK counties - from Kent in the South East to Kincardineshire in the North of Scotland.
Each variety has its own subtle flavour, and those with delicate tastebuds may notice hints of peach, apple and blackcurrant.
Foodies love to eat strawberries tossed with balsamic vinegar for dessert.
Varieties of the fruit currently on sale at Sainsbury’s are Dream, a sweet and aromatic type with juicy flesh and Murano, a variety specifically bred to offer the best combination of flavour and vibrant red colour.
Peter Czarnobaj, Sainsbury’s technical manager for soft fruits, said of the fruit: “Once we come into the British strawberry season, we would expect them to remain the top pick in customers’ baskets for around five months.
“You could say it’s the most important product to get right at this time of year.
The nation loves strawberries, with one punnet selling every second at Sainsbury's
“Our customers seem to agree and continue to enjoy the tasty punnets of one of our most prized products.”
Google searched have shown that apple crumble and fish and chips are the nation’s most searched recipes.
It wasn’t all heavy, rich foods as sea bass and greek salad also made the top ten.
